Pippa Middleton is getting a £500,000-ish advance to write a book.
Being an emotional person at the best of times, I couldn't help feel jealous. Why isn't this me getting a huge advance? Oh that's right, because I'm not famous and my sister won't be Queen of England (and the rest of the Commonwealth) one day.
I fed the jealousy for a while, especially when I read this line:
Middleton is said to be very keen to do publicity for the book, which is not yet written and has been sold on concept.
I don't know who her agent is, but I take my hat off to them. You sold a book, on concept, in THIS ECONOMY? Well done you!
Me, I have to write and finish the absolute best books I can and then my agent does her very best work to find a publisher for it.
Celebrities, sports stars and politicians get book deals. Some of them get massive advances as well. They get paid the big bucks because the publishers see it as a risk worth taking.
Celebrity books sell. The publisher makes a profit and in turn they can use that to take a risk on unknown authors.
Here's where I stop being jealous and remember how grateful I am.
I am a published author and for that I will be eternally grateful.
My publishers paid me a lovely advance and I'm keen to earn it all out and then some.
My books receive gushing reviews from people who don't know me and don't 'owe me a favour'. In other words, they're people who love books and love spreading the word. That, my friends, is pure magic.
Nobody else can write my books like I can.
How could I be anything but grateful?

I totally get the jealousy though. ;-)
Hi Julie, Yep, the jealousy is there, I can't help it. But after I get over that I do remember I'm on a pretty good wicket.
The other thing to remember is the agent isn't trading on the supposed content of the book but on her name and her celebrity. Still, the jealousy is understandable.
I must admit, it makes me grind my teeth when I hear stories like this. There are writers out there with fantastic novels that get passed up because no one knows who they are. Gggrrrr.
Sold based off the idea! Ggggrrrrr. But then, you know people will buy it. The publisher made a smart move, terrible as that is and as much as we don't want to admit it.
Yes, of course, let's all be terribly sensible about this.
But why couldn't it have been meeeeeeeee? *throws tantrum*
heheheh.
Aww, how awesome! For you I mean. Pippa? Well... we'll see. :D
