As a writer trying to pimp share the news of my books, I can't expect more than 30 seconds of your time.
Doesn't say much for the world's collective attention span!
It does says bucketloads for how busy people are.
Book trailers need to capture the essence of the book in as few frames as possible.
1. What's the book's central conflict?
2. What's the title?
3. Who wrote it?
4. Does it have any ferrets?
If the trailer has done its job, people will:
a) hear the 'magic' of the music
b) note the romance of the couple having a smooch
c) have a giggle at the bloke turning into a ferret. Possibly the least romantic animal in the world. (But hands down, the most mischievous!)
d) see a shot of both book covers, then it's all over and they can go about their day.
NOTE: Make sure you have the rights to the images in your trailer. I bought two pictures for this trailer from a royalty-free website (like istockphoto or dreamstime). I've paid a few dollars to use each pic up to 500,000 times, which is incredible value. As a creative person, I enjoy being paid for my creative endeavours. I'd be a hypocrite to swipe someone else's stuff to promote my creative work.
Do you have a trailer for your book? Post a link in the comments below and we can all share the clips.
oh yes, one more thing:
Happy New Year!

I have book trailers on You Tube. Here is the latest one. It's two of my YA fantasy books together in one volume. The Faerie Chronicles: Aine and Faerie Folk. : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccgMfLVzlN4
Great Trailer!!!! Happy New Year to you too!
Nicely done there Kathleen, and you also included your website in the trailer, very smart.
Hi Lisa, hehehehe, thanks for that. Have a fab new year.
No trailers for me because I'm so broke, but it would be so much fun to shoot my own trailer starring friends and such. It would be a zaniest thing in the world, but alas, no ferrets.
I love your trailer, Ebony. Makes me impatient to get my giftcards so I can do buy them!
Happy New Year!
Hey Marlena, thank you very much. I am grinning from ear to ear.
The beauty of some trailer-makins sites is you can sign up for free (as I did) and make a short clip. The only reason mine cost a few dollars was I bought some images instead of using my own. I don't have my own pet ferret to photograph . . . although I think I really should get one!
That's such a cute trailer! I don't have one for my book but I've been thinking about having one made.
Heather, making that trailer was loads of fun but also really interesting in terms of using way too many effects, then dialling it back.
I did spend a couple hours mucking about and trying different things, and now I feel like I have the hang of it. When I next have a day off (or the dishes pile up in the sink and I can't face it) I'll make another one.
