Stay With The Nightmare

Trapped in the back seat of the car.
It's rolling down the hill towards the ocean.
Screaming.
The driver isn't listening.
The driver isn't even there!
The car is empty except me - the handbrake is off, careering down the steep road towards the ocean below, straight through the barriers and flying through the air . . .

I wake up screaming.

Bay St Lorne, Victoria, as seen on the street view
of Google Maps.  It's hard to appreciate from this picture
how steep these roads are. So go visit for yourself!
This was my usual sleep pattern for much of my childhood. Repeat nightmares of driving off a cliff.

Psychologists will say this points to feelings of being out of control. I could have told you that for free.  I lived in Lorne, and the roads there are very steep and the ocean is deep.

We mostly walked to our friends houses, but when we did drive I was a terrible passenger, because of those nightmares.

I started training myself that it was a dream, that you can't die in a dream. To get rid of the exhausting nightmares, I made myself stay with the dream.

The car drove off the cliff, through the safety barrier on the intersection below, sailing through the air . . . then it landed without so much as a bump on the sand and I simply walked out of it, unharmed.

I stayed with the nightmare and I kicked it's ass. I never had it again. Here are some other people doing something similar. I wish them all the very best.

Probably saved my parents thousands in psych fees! If only I'd known how to properly capitalise on it at the time, lol.

Yikes! I've had a similar dream before. A sign of feeling out of control for sure. I love that you stayed with the dream and kicked its butt, that rocks!

Thanks Heather!
Now if only I can control those dreams where nobody is listening to me.
